"Sing to the Lord a new song,...Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples." "God's plan has never changed!" Psalm 96 and those words of Ed Clowney changed my life. His passion for the Glory of Christ infected my whole being. Thanks dear King for such a servant.

You know, I remember talking with Ed about his son's visit to our multimedia lab at UC San Diego ... he was so excited about Paul's skills and the potential for educational technology to be put to use in seminary education for the kingdom of Christ.

That is powerful encouragement as we work zealously to carry on the mission to see the church advanced and Savior honored. We are all thankful for the very practical theology of Ed Clowney, a good friend and teacher.

Rebecca and all the family,
Your father's book, The Church, helped me immensely in coming to understand the church's significance. I have used quotations from it in several papers that I wrote as I climbed the academic ladder en route to an Ed.D.
Will be in prayer for you and yours! Thinking of you.

I remember fondly the time Ed and Jean had lunch with my wife and myself many years ago in Miami, when we were part of the International Community Church. I was so impressed with his humble, gracious spirit and the sincerety that he exhibited in our conversation.

Grateful to have known him!

Ed's only flaw as a teacher was that the content of his lectures was so rich that it was practically impossible to take notes. Notwithstanding, the truth got into my marrow, and Ed Clowney continues to influence me every time I stand up to speak out of the Biblical tradition. Thanks be to God for his life.

I was a D Min student at Westminster West and eagerly awaited the class with Dr Clowney. Although at that time he was in the twilight of life, his humor, his memory, his insights into God's Word and his obvious love for Christ deeply impacted me. He seemed to me to be the quintessential Christian scholar and theologian: one who still marvelled at Jesus Christ.

I was a 40-something lawyer when my wife and I attended a prospective student conference at Westminster Seminary California. We sat in on a lecture by Ed Clowney. I was unexpectedly moved to tears by the One To Whom Ed Always Pointed -- Jesus. It would not be the last time. That was a turning point.
I count it among God's greatest blessings to have learned from Ed Clowney. I will never forget the day when he invited me into his office and asked if he could pray for me. Pray for me! In his devotion to Jesus, Ed was always pushing others, not himself, forward. I learned so much from him, but it only showed me how much more I need to learn. I look forward to mining his writings (including the one he just finished on Christ and the Ten Commandments) which, like the man, are rich in grace and anchored to Christ.

My wife and I want to thanks the Lord for your husband's ministry. By his Christ-centered writings and perspective he helped me on numerous occasions in my work.
We commend you all to God's grace and comfort.

Dear Jean and Beloved Family,

I am sad to hear of Ed's passing, I so hoped to see him one more time. Jay and I loved him very much. I can imagine the joy that God had bringing him home. He now gets to enjoy that twinkle in his eye and that sly smile that crosses his face when he knows he has set a small burr under the brocade robes of formality. The vision of Ed describing his disdain of dancing in the sanctuary as he tried to emulate it will never leave my heart. My children are teenagers now, but I loved how Ed would bend down to talk to them as small children. One day in Ed’s office at the seminary Zach sat twirling around in Ed's chair. I told my son to write this memory on his heart, to remember the day one of the most honorable founders of the church allowed him this privilege and to share it with his children. Thank you for allowing us to share our memories with you.
In Christ,
Jay, Marty, Zachariah & Michael Sesto

Clowney remembered

It is a bittersweet thing for me to hear of the graduation of Dr. Edmund Clowney from this world to the next. So many years of wonderful fellowship fill my memories. Yet the thought of our brother being with Christ and the host of believers in heaven is a joy without regret.

Often I was simply the recipient of his clear exposition of Scripture as he preached. For example, the excellent addresses he gave to InterVarsity Christian Fellowship’s Urbana Missionary Conference in 1973 and again in 1976 made an impact on me and thousands of students and staff. Who could forget his message on the Glory of God?

However it was during his repeated visits to InterVarsity's CEDAR CAMPUS in Michigan's upper peninsula that I came to know him well. We planned for meetings so that hymns, prayers and sermons would flow. Sometimes the camp program would be for undergraduate students. Sometimes a Pastors's Seminar, or a Family Camp. His gift with words stretched our view of God and of Christ in the Old Testament. His words are in our hymnal and posted on our walls. Gladys and I were the happy recipients of a poem he wrote celebrating 40 years of ministry at CEDAR CAMPUS in 1994. He was a biblical scholar, a poet, uniquely creative in so many areas and a dear friend. Blessed are the students who sat under his ministry during his many years at camp.

Ed was interested in the world. He caught beauty as a painter, as he caught beauty in words. I learned so much from his conversations, from sharing stories, from laughing together. My golf game has been greatly helped by Ed's careful criticism. Perhaps a test of one's Christianity can be best observed on the golf course, and Ed never failed to pass that test.

Ed's ministry reflected the loving support of his dear wife, Jean. She always had a most positive input into the camp situation in conversations and sharing of her musical giftedness. May Jean and the entire family experience the Lord's support at this crucial time.
